Things you should know
How you can help the photographer?
There is a lot more to photography then having a professional camera. From light conditions to wall color, there are hundreds of factors that can affect the outcome. It is important to provide your photographer with as much information as possible.
Outdoor events
The great outdoors provides us with an abundance of natural light. There is no better light source then the sun and when out it is usually the photographers dream. There are some pitfalls as well. One of the first things a photographer learns is how to use natural light. The problem is that the sun does not stay in place. Even on the best of days a multi-hour event will cycle through a series of lighting conditions. Morning light come from the East and will slowly creep around the earth as the day goes on. It is vital to consult the photographer before setting up an outdoor event!
Things to consider
Morning and evening light is the best. The noon sun is likely to produce harsh shadows and will require additional lighting even outdoors. While setting up the event, consider which way the attendees will be facing. Which part of the day will the most important shots be taken?
Shooting into the sun can produce cool effects but as a general rule it is undesirable. While setting up an outdoor shoot it is the first consideration on photographers mind.
Indoor events
Taking the camera indoors changes things dramatically. Even the best lit banquet halls lack sufficient lighting for professional photography. Most events are dynamic. Attendees move around the space and move to the music. To capture the event a flash is often used to offset the lack of light. Flash photography, although effective, does not produce the same level of results one would expect from a studio or from outdoors. It is always a good idea to designate a space where the photographer can set up a mobile studio. This will allow the photographer to control the lighting and the background much more effectively.
Studio
The studio allows the photographer to create lighting scenarios when mother nature is not cooperating. The controlled environment of the studio is a great for achieving consistent results. The adjustable lighting, air movement and temperature can substitute for the discomfort of seasonal photography.
